Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary the home to the wild rhinos at Nakitoma trading centre in Nakasongola district is situated 176km (100 miles) north of Kampala the capital city of Uganda on Kampala-Gulu highway short way to Murchison Falls National Park. This is the best destination for rhino tracking of the fact that it’s always done on foot for clear, memorable and adventurous spots.
By the end of 1982, rhinos were pretty much extinct in Uganda because they had been endlessly poached and killed. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is not a zoo, it is a sanctuary where these white type of Rhinos can move around in safety. They are protected all day and night from poachers by an electrical fence and security personnel.
The Introduction of the zziwa sanctuary is a project of the Rhino Fund Uganda that fostered the restoration of the rhinos in Uganda. There are 21 white rhinos as of 2017 and these highly attract tourists from different countries for the rhino tracking activity.
Of the fact that rhino tracking is done on foot, tourists are briefed and given guideline by a sanctuary ranger since they will be allowed to move close to the rhinos for a memorable experience and an unusual photo moments as you encounter with different rhinos. Other activities at the sanctuary:
1. Shoebill canoe ride and bird watching
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is home to over 350 bird species and is a great destination for avid birders interested in finding those rare African species.
